song into poem: a couple minutes

the lines in the palm of your hands
draw me to the first time your smile connected with mine
like a sealed envelope arriving on wednesday
you turned to smoking your last pack
and i knew you were not okay.
a couple minutes before you walk away
i’d like to hold you enough to stay
only for a couple minutes
‘cause you reset my day.
amen,
we found a silver lining
through your stare there’s no denying
how our hearts still linger
for better and for worse.
but we’re aware it’d be a mistake
to sit with the burden of conditional love.
i guess there’s some good in goodbyes.
every part of me that’s in your heart will be old news
every part of me that knows your heart will be like Olivia’s tune
every part of me that’s in your heart will find a new rush
and a couple minutes later we’ll start a new life.
