A chase for gold does not always result in conquering the storms that come with fulfilling a dream. This happens to be Thato Mofokeng’s trajectory in his pursuit of making a name for himself as an artist. Professionally known as justcallmeteezy, his homecoming filled a spark that would encourage a revival – to actualize his personal revelations and acquire new skills to prove to himself and whoever dares to listen that he’s ready for the spotlight.

On the 25th of April 2025 justcallmeteezy hosted an exclusive listening session for his debut EP ‘Prolly in Da Hood’ which was released on the 23rd of May 2025. This 28-minute project is self-assertive and intentional with rhythmic beats that carry heavy 808s and a Motswako flair that’s undeniably appealing. The cover art visualizes the hood element that is meant to connect with the audience from an honest standpoint. Capturing his hometown village Motswedi in Zeerust the approach to the lyricism and aesthetic was to protect his identity. ‘Prolly in Da Hood’ consists of 8 tracks that convey messages of hope, bittersweet realities of township lifestyle, excitement and loss. At the listening session he confessed to saying that “Hood Superhero” was motivated by the fact that he doesn’t have a role model or idol to lean on for personal development and instead wants to be his own hero. As he relives his proudest moments of the EP, this is how he describes how he feels: “It opened me up sonically to a different ball game… That’s the realest I’ve kept. It is very raw and authentic.”

With guest appearances from Tshego Santana, Barcode Mafia, Honcho 08 and Macy X, these are close affiliations that have grounded and inspired him to make the songs what they are. He relies solely on connecting with an artist when deciding who to work with. For instance, “Big Man Talk” was a spur of the moment record that has found a home in fans’ hearts. Honcho 08 being the lead producer of the EP and having guest rap features really showcases the flavor he brings to the table (this is one of the highlights in the project). I guess when you are handled by a management agency that caters to your needs and strives to catapult your desired goals as an artist, it pays off in unimaginable ways. Sadboys Entertainment, a home to justcallmeteezy, collaborator Barcode Mafia amongst others, serves as an intermediary to assist these artists reach their fullest potential and contribute to the hip-hop culture. When asked to express the relationship he has with the team there was an emphasis on how everybody is involved in supporting the other all the while learning to improve their individual selves. Three words he chose to identify the bond: “Sacrifice. Belief. Determination.” Six months in since the project was released an announcement of a deluxe with six new songs really takes things to a new level. ‘Still In Da Hood’ promises to dive deeper into the shadow side of what ‘Prolly in Da Hood’ served. Referring to the last song “Too Soon (Nkgono Sarah’s Interlude)” on ‘Prolly in Da Hood’ which was a tribute to his late grandmother, the deluxe continues to unravel the hardships of living in the township and what it does to a black child. It is set to drop before the year ends.

Sidenote: justcallmeteezy believes he has worked with everyone he’s wanted to in Zeerust except for Eldon Rodeo. His dream collaborations include Usimamane, Loatinover Pounds, Young Stunna, Focalistic, Cassper Nyovest, Nasty C, and many more.
